The introduction should be about 100 words long. #4 Make sure the content of the introduction is relevant to the content of the rest of the essay. #5 Write primarily about why you are writing your essay or paper, not primarily about what it is you are writing. #6 Start with a hook that will make them want to continue reading. For example "Sometimes I think life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what’s coming next!" (Forrest Gump) #7 Open with your thesis statement, which can be one sentence or several, but should contain your main argument or claim. #8 State your topic sentence, which is the main idea of your introduction. The topic sentence should be specific, and not a general statement. #9 Use a "grabber" that will make them want to read more. The grabber can be a question or a startling statement. #10 The last sentence in the introduction should not merely reiterate what you have already said. The last sentence should create curiosity and leave readers wanting to read more. Ending with a rhetorical question or statement that will make them want to continue reading the rest of the essay is good practice in this regard. #11 Avoid trite openings such as "In this paper I..." or "In this essay I will discuss... ". #12 Be concerned with how your introduction will be received by the reader, who is most likely a complete stranger to you. People will judge you by your introduction, so make it sound educational and interesting to them. #13 Edit the English language of your introduction several times to make sure your use of proper grammar, sentence structure, and sentence structure is appropriate for an academic essay or paper.
